The Tractor
What do you get when you mix a '46 CJ2A frame with all the leftover parts from years of wrenching and wheeling magazine project vehicles? You get a tractor, or at least that's what Jimmy Nylund calls this wheeling wonder. Jimmy is semiretired from Four Wheeler magazine where he's been writing since before most of the 4-Wheel & Off-Road staff was out of high school. The tractor has the engine from a DJ3A that smokes like crazy (as any tractor should), a T90 three-speed and model 18 transfer case, a NOS Dana 30 front axle with 11-inch drums, and a retired, bent Dana 44 rear axle with a Detroit and disc brakes. Believe it or not, this machine does exceed the $1,500 limit if you were trying to build it from scratch, but when you're like Jimmy, things like the mismatched 28x8.50-14 swampers and 31x12.50-15 Boggers just seem to end up coming together just fine.

Randy
Randy Ellis made a name for himself by building some amazingly capable rockcrawlers, so it surprised us when he sold all his high-end toys and started building a "Retro-Wheeler." His goal was to build a Jeep like what he drove back in high school, and returning to a time before all his rides had coilover shocks and trick tube work. Something that put the challenge back in his driving style and not in his fabrication style. The result is a '76 CJ-5 with a 304, T150 tranny, and Dana 20 case. The Dana 30 front and 44 rear axles, both with open diffs, are slung under the springs and spin 33-inch ProComp ATs. Total investment: $1,462.

Yosemite Samurai
Tim Hardy and his Yosemite Samurai showed up out of nowhere and again amazed us all with his ingenuity and perseverance. Tim is the guy that drives his junk everywhere, wheels it hard, rolls it over, fixes any major issues, and drives home. His Suzuki has the same 1.3L engine that it came from the factory with, but everything else has been tweaked and modified. Luckily the body is still pristine, and he only slightly scratched his dents when Fred tried to spot him off a small cliff.
