The good news is only some minor injuries, no crashes or fatalities, have been reported as a result of the problem.
GM will replace those cables free of charge with stainless steel cables. Because so many vehicles are involved, however, the replacements will have to be made in phases. In the meantime, GM is advising owners to avoid applying direct loads to the tailgate until the cables can be inspected and, if necessary, replaced.
