Wooly's Off Road Park Alabama - Wild Wooly's Weekend

Two Great Stops In ' Bama And Tennessee

Photography by Fred Williams

We grabbed our bags, locked the shop, and hopped a free-bird down to Alabama for some good times in the back woods. The Southeast is a great place to wheel, and the 4x4s that live down there strike fear in even the biggest rocks. lucky forus, some friends had set up a ride at a little family place called Wooly's off Road park. wooly's has about 500 acres situated a short distance outside of lewisburg, Tennessee. we spent a long day cruising up and down the trails, watching folks spin tires on snotty mud climbs, and even had some guys running their rides off the motorcycle jumps.

On our way home from wooly's we stopped by the Elk Ranch, which is hidden in the woods near Florette, Alabama. The last Saturday in August is the date of the king of the hill race where drivers can throttle their rides up the side of a mountain strewn with boulders so big they make 44-inch tires look like training wheels. we got to see folks batter, bash, and crash their way all over these stone-covered trails, and had a great time doing it. So if you're southbound be sure to stop and have a look at what these two sites have to offer.

To contact wooly's, call the wolaver family at 931.703.3129, or visit www.woolysoffroad.com. To learn more about the Elk Ranch/king of the hill, contact Rocket city off Road in huntsville, Alabama (256.883.1131, www.rocketcityoffroad.com). • The terrain at wooly's is a variety of hillclimbs, dirt-covered rocks, and deep notches with a mixture of mud thrown in for good measure. wayne walls showed up to do some wheeling so we invited him along in his '85 4Runner so that all the Jeep guys would have someone to pick on. lucky for wayne his 4.3l V-6-powered Toy did great and the dana 60 spinning 42-inch Swampers was right at home in the slippery sloppy stuff. however, wayne says if he had to do it again, he would have used a 6.0l V-8 and an Atlas, and we see nothing wrong with that.

  • Uncle Bob Barnett's new buggy was the cleanest tube car on the trail, but unfortunately Bob found the sharpest obstacles in the place and had flat-tire issues. his hot rod rides on a dana 60 up front and a corporate 14-bolt out back with a 364 (6.0l) V-8 bored and stroked to 402 out of a Gmc denali under the hood. Built by Adam woodlee at wide open design in murfreesboro, Tennessee, this buggy was getting gawked at all day long.

  • Everyone loves wheeling, and when a birthday party breaks out on an off-road trip it's even better. leah light was the lucky girl who got to eat cake, plus her friend candy Brown let her drive this monster Jeep known as candy cane 2. Under the hood is a 6.0l V-8 that easily spins the 44-inch Boggers and Swampers at the ends of each 2 1/2-ton axle. This yJ was the offi cial party wagon where leah and all her girlfriends rode around whooping it up.

  • One of the benefits of a private park is that accidental obstacles like this tree won't have a bunch of hippies rushing to shut down the trail. chris and Angela Turner had what might be the last wrangler in the Southeast not on 1- or 21/2-ton axles, but they still wheel it hard. The dana 30-front/currie 9-inch-rear combo had no problems with the 35-inch Swampers.

  • Further proof that Jeep yJs are great trail rigs (even if they have those goofy square headlights) is Tim kelly's wrangler with the stock 4.0l still chugging along with a set of tough dana 60s underneath. Unfortunately, a busted leaf spring ended Tim's day early, but not before he got to squeeze his Jeep down the narrow willy makeit trail.

  • Candy Brown took her Jeep and barrelrolled it down a muddy hill the day before at wooly's, so come Sunday her husband Lonnie took the reigns to show her how to properly drive. needless to say, gravity is a strong suit in the Brown household.

  • Tony cousins owns an off-road park a few hours south of king of the hill, but that doesn't mean he won't support other places to wheel. Tony showed up in his classic Renegade, and got all types of tipsy on the trails at Elk Ranch. Though not a huge-acreage park, this mountainside of massive boulders has tons of obstacles to fill a day or two of radical rockcrawling.

  • There's always got to be that one guy who shows up in some oddball truck, but luckily when you're mazda mo, no one makes fun because you can make it up obstacles in your '87 B2000 that even buggies can't surmount. mo's ride started as a two-wheel-drive and now has linked-and-locked 1-tons underneath the frame and a fuel-injected mopar 360 under the hood. we love those who dare to be different, so send in your oddball creations.
