Since playing in the mud is usually more forgiving on body panels than rockcrawling is, we tend to see more full-bodied and classic vehicles bogging through the pits. This classic war wagon was heavily modified from top to bottom, but still retained much of the timeless Dodge appearance.

Tucked in the backwoods of Bloomsdale, Missouri, are some of the best muddy fields the Midwest has to offer. For six years now Jeremy Naeger, owner of Custom Differentials, has teamed up with Pit Bull Tires to create one of the largest and most fun-filled mud events inside the Show Me State. Appropriately named the Pit Bull Mud Bash, this daylong fall event is open to any and all 4x4 enthusiasts.

No matter whether you're looking to see how that bone-stock pickup plays in the dirt or if those new rice and cane tractor tires were worth the investment, there's a pit for you inside the gates. You can even win a little dough if you're brave enough to try to conquer one of the property's untamed competition-only pits.

Getting stuck is all part of playing in the pit. Luckily, a few pieces of heavy equipment were on hand to give you a yank when you needed it.

Don't have a truck? No problem. The property is extremely spectator-friendly. Between the manmade competition rockcrawl area, multiple pits, live music, and spaghetti wrestling, there is plenty to keep you entertained. • Not all of the trucks playing in the pit were dedicated mud boggers. Plenty of mildly modified and daily driven 4x4s hit the mud with great success.

  • While 50-inch-plus tractor tires might not be right for your next build, they are pretty much standard equipment for dedicated mud runners. This Blue Oval beast even proved that the rice and cane farm claws also work well in reverse!

  • Interlaced throughout the smaller pit area was a series of hillclimbs. Although these extruding dirt mounds might appear small, they proved to be an interesting challenge, even for some of the bigger trucks.

  • The class for 44-inch tires and under kicked off the cash-prize competition mud run. Given the mud's thick state, many didn't make it far past the first truck-devouring section.

  • Without exaggeration, Mark Andrew's '63 Viking 2-ton dump truck hybrid was one of biggest mud toys we've ever seen. Participating in the class for 44-inch tires and above, Mark's monster didn't make it all the way out of the pit, but did manage to complete the longest run of the day.

  • Things heated up during an exhibition run by the Pit Bull-sponsored Mega S-10. While powering through the thick Missouri muck, the transmission reached its boiling point and began coughing up fluid. Fortunately, a few fast hands and a nearby fire extinguisher took care of the blaze before the Pit Bull Chevy was in the doghouse for good.

  • Engine troubles kept this towering Jeep Wrangler from making a full run through the pit. Given its lightweight chassis, V-8 power, and huge tire setup, it was one of the favorites to win the big cash prize.

  • With 2 1/2-ton Rockwells bolted underneath and a heavy right foot, we had high hopes for this GMC work truck-turned-rugged wheeler. Though they put on a great effort, the truck overheated and then timed out before going the distance.
