The big tractor tires fling the slop the best, and Some areas of the country have more mud than rocks. We love finding those special events that highlight mud bogging. Long before rockcrawling became popular, 4x4 guys and gals were slopping it out in backyard mud pits around the country. Up in Colebrook, New Hampshire, local tire shop owner Brian LaPerle set about to make his friends and customers happy by building a mud bog behind Northern Tire, and doing it for fun and bragging rights. There's no series drama here, just homemade fun along with classes divided simply by the tire size. Sure, a few guys specifically want to do nothing but win, but the whole event is actually based around good old muddin' fun instead of cutthroat competition. Brian started out with a simple mud pit track, some flags, and friends. After 11 years his event has grown into the biggest in town, with spectators coming from all around New England. While the event's not affiliated with any series, the big dogs still come for the fun, and the regulars bring out the family truckster and try to make it more than 10 feet through the slop. We were lucky enough to catch the action last spring after what is known as the mud season-in between the cold of snow and the dry summer dust. For more information on Brian's event next year, go to www.northerntire.com, or write Northern Tire at notire@ncia.net. Also check out our website, 4wheeloffroad.com, for more photos of the event than what we have room to show here.
