Crawlfest 2011: Sand Hollow State Park

Awesome Wheeling For A Cause

Twelve trails were used at the event this year, making one always available for every skill level. There's always plenty of support to help guide and spot crawlers up, over, and around obstacles. Crawlfest is a awesome event filled with adventure and is a perfect setting for wholesome family fun. We saw more families on the trail than we do at most events. It's certainly a great way to get the kids out in the great outdoors and teach them a thing or two about four-wheeling.

When we turned into the staging at the Washington County Fairgrounds for Crawlfest we were surprised to see so many rigs at an event that's only in its fourth year. There's no doubt that word spreads fast about a great time! There were hundreds of 4x4s and ecstatic enthusiasts just itching to hit the red rock trails.

Good times and great four-wheeling aren't all the Crawlfest is about. The all-volunteer staff use the event to raise funds for local and national land use organizations such as the BlueRibbon Coalition, Utah 4-Wheel Drive Association, and United Four Wheel Drive Association. The funds help fight the good fight to keep public lands open for recreational use and stop senseless land closures.

Crawlfest is held just outside Hurricane, Utah, and the trails are located on designated Bureau of Land Management property at Sand Hollow State Park. The park sits between Hurricane and St. George, so there are lots of other recreational activities in the area to enjoy. St. George is also close enough to get parts for broken rigs and be back on the trail in just a few hours.

The event is also about education. There's a cleanup each event to collect trash in and around Sand Hollow State Park. The cleanup is a great way to show youngsters and those just getting into the sport trail etiquette and respect for the land.

Crawlfest had 250 registered rigs, 700 people, 15 onsite vendors, and 53 sponsoring companies. Registration included lunch on the trail and a raffle ticket for Friday night. Saturday night the big raffle was held and thousands of dollars of prizes were given away. Crawlfest is a great event held at a time of year when most of the country is frozen over with snow. We can't wait to wheel next year's event. For more information on Crawlfest '12 visit www.crawlfest.com.

  • Although Sand Hollow State Recreation Park isn't as large as Moab, most of the trails are as challenging and scenic. One feature at Sand Hollow that outdoes Moab in every way is the massive sand dune area that's completely open for four-wheeling, motorcycles, ATVs, and side-by-sides.

  • Including the trails, there are two huge play areas that feature tough obstacles while taking a break from trail runs. This fun waterfall was just a few yards from the day's BBQ wagon and lunch station and offered great action while people chowed down on a tasty meal.

  • Sand Hollow is very similar to Moab, Utah. In fact, most participants visiting the area for the first time can't help comment about the similarities. We found some of the obstacles just as tough as, if not harder than, some famous ones we hit in Moab every year.

  • The climate around Hurricane and St. George is relatively mild in winter and warm in summer. The cool winter months bring some snow, but it doesn't stick around long, and it makes four-wheeling the red rocks at Sand Hollow even more fun and challenging.

  • Sand Hollow State Park is filled with every imaginable type of trail, terrain, and obstacle, so there's something for ATVs, big trucks, and everything in between to wheel on. We found this diesel Dodge truck on many trails and obstacle, so don't let the prominence of Jeeps at the event keep you truck owners away.
