49th Annual Tierra Del Sol Desert Safari

Every March for the past 49 years the Tierra Del Sol Four Wheel Drive Club of Sand Diego, California, has put on the Desert Safari, an off-road event near Truckhaven, California. This event offers a long weekend of wheeling, exploring, and generally enjoying the desert from the seat of your favorite 4x4. We like the Desert Safari because the terrain is so unique, with miles and miles of rolling dirt hills, climbs, notches, gullies, and washes. You can putter along in your stock CJ or Wrangler, twist up your tube buggy, or squeeze through in your fullsize. No matter what, you’ll find something to play on.

Next year will definitely be the biggest, as it’s the 50th anniversary. So get cracking on that project you’ve been whittling away on in the garage, and pack some clothes for everything from sweltering sun to dusty desert wind because you never know what it will be like in March. For even more info check out the club’s website, www.tds4x4.com.

Representin’ Pays Off
Daniel Alvarez had his ups and downs at the Desert Safari. He was looking forward to a weekend with his family off-roading in his Jeep, but found his world upside-down in a slight roll that did some damage he wasn’t looking forward to. His luck changed when we spotted his Jeep running 4WOR colors at the end of the weekend and awarded him a gift certificate for a set of General Tires (www.generaltire.com) just for running our sticker. If you like 4-Wheel & Off-Road, run a sticker, wear a hat, or just wave a copy of the magazine at us. You never know—we may give you a prize.

  • The 2011 Desert Safari started with the ribbon cutting of the brand-new Truckhaven 4x4 Training Facility. This innovative off-roading area covers 31 acres and offers a variety of manmade obstacles, from tire piles to concrete gullies. It was built through the hard work of the Tierra Del Sol club and the Ocotillo Wells State Park SVRA management, and it encompasses challenges for every skill level and vehicle.

  • The event started with guys in little flatfender Jeeps and is now filled with tiny UTVs. We’re nostalgic for the olden days and like watching “TDS : The Early Years” on YouTube, but it’s still a major Jeep and truck event.

  • No matter what you’re wheeling, you need to be aware that this dynamic terrain can hide holes and cliffs over any hill. Mike Hendrix stopped short of an upending situation when his buggy dropped one in a deep gulch after a steep climb on the other side. Winch to the rescue!

  • If the new training facility isn’t enough, the surrounding desert off-road area is some of the best you’ll ever see. The dirt is forgiving to most body panels, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get in trouble. The official runs lead attendees through the weaving trails and twisting canyons of Truckhaven.

  • Speaking of Jeeps, it is a perfect place for playing Jeep spotter:, flatties, CJs, YJs, TJs, and JKs are everywhere. Of course Toyotas, GMs, Fords and a random Isuzu or Suzuki are also found climbing and crawling like millions of desert ants.
