2012 Moab Easter Jeep Safari

Red Rock Draws Us In

By Fred Williams, Photography by Fred Williams

The week before Easter a subliminal homing beacon starts pinging and Jeepers, wheelers, and other off-road enthusiasts nationwide fire up tow rigs and trail rigs and begin the pilgrimage to the red rock temple: Moab, Utah. We know you’ve seen it here before, and you’ll see it here again. And that’s because we love the darn place. It’s a small town nestled amongst red rock cliffs with a rich history in uranium mining, maybe some gold, and a long line of wild characters looking for fortune or escaping the grid. We go for all that, and also for some of the most beautiful four-wheeling in the nation.

The Easter Jeep Safari (EJS) is hosted by the Red Rock 4-Wheelers. Although it seemed like you were required to have a four-door Jeep Wrangler just to get in the town, in fact the event is open to all 4x4s. Fullsize trucks were running trails as well as imports and tube cars. (Be warned, buggy owners: You need to tow to the trailheads, as the local authorities aren’t so keen on rigs missing flaps and fenders.) The variety of trails—from hardcore insanity at the private Area BFE to the mind game of steep climbs on Hell’s Revenge—offers something for everyone. The townsfolk seem extremely welcoming to Jeepers of all makes. Although we imagine it’s different the rest of the year, it is hard to leave EJS without Moab melancholy.

If you’ve read our coverage of Moab before then we will surely sound like a broken record when we say you need to attend. Coming for EJS is a blast, but coming any time is worth the trip. There is plenty of camping, hotels, mountain biking, hiking, rafting, restaurants, and of course four-wheeling. So plan a vacation, tell your boss you’ve got the slickrock sickness, and head to the home of red rock. To attend next year’s EJS, check out www.rr4w.com for official entry information.

  • The vehicle of choice for Easter Jeep Safari 2012 was definitely the four-door Jeep Wrangler JK. We saw them in every configuration. The general theme is 4-inch lift, 37-inch tires, winch, lights, and some sort of aftermarket bumpers, sliders, and fenders. The wheelbase makes them great climbers, though they look like lemmings following nose-to-tail across the hills.

  • The guys from Jeep and Mopar are renowned for bringing some very cool concepts to Moab each year. This year was no exception with a new Grand Cherokee Trailhawk, possibly hinting to a more off-road–capable Grand arriving soon to dealer floors with better tires and tow points. There was also a flashback Willys wagon that was hiding a Jeep TJ Unlimited chassis and powertrain underneath complete with a 4.0L and coil-sprung suspension. The Nukizer concept was shown previously but returned for display.

  • Crossing the famous Golden Crack on Golden Spike Trail, as Brady Lehr from Denver does in this photo, is a Moab tradition. Though not as difficult with the bigger tires run these days, it can still grab an unsuspecting Jeeper and drag him in.

  • If you’re looking for some shopping, there are plenty of trinkets and T-shirts for sale in downtown Moab. Or you can attend the Man-Mall, also known as the Easter Jeep Safari Expo & Trade Show, where tons of manufacturers show off and sell their 4x4 wares.

  • Lance and Renee Clifford hit the trail in their brand-new IFS rock buggy. Designed for family wheeling and desert/rock racing, this tube car had more gawkers than a showgirl on a submarine. It had a couple new-car issues but still snapped a few necks when the healthy V-8 fired up across the slickrock.

  • Mark Hesser was driving his company car from Synergy Suspension when he took this opportunity to show off some three-wheel action. He slowly backed off and chose a less dramatic line rather than tell the boss his Jeep fell over.

  • We are seeing more and more aftermarket axles under the big four-door Jeeps as owners upgrade to taller tires. Though many JK owners are new to the off-road sport, they are not scared to jump right in. This Hemi-powered JK had no fear of the Rock Chucker obstacle on the Metal Masher Trail.

  • Another awesome concept truck from Jeep Design is the J12. This is based on a four-door Jeep JK with a Mopar JK-8 pickup conversion kit, but then a new front clip was cast in fiberglass and the bed was stretched to give it the classic “old man truck” look a la the J-series pickup. It drove like a new Jeep but was accessorized with a white vinyl bench seat, old guy compass, and even a fishin’ rod!

  • One of the biggest Jeeps we came across with the Rattle-Trap from MBRP Exhaust. Fitted with a Cummins diesel, Axletech Portals on Currie axles, and massive Pit Bull tires, this behemoth bellowed black smoke as it clambered up obstacles.

  • As the week wound down there was still plenty of excitement for wheelers to enjoy. Out at Area BFE the W.E. ROCK Dirt Riot race was going on and Ultimate Adventure alumnus Ben Swain was testing out his new buggy with a 12th Place finish.

  • One of the coolest trail fixes of the week came when a Jeeper broke his track bar and the Synergy crew handed off their own to get the guy off the trail. Then they Rube Goldberged this crisscross chain and winch rope system to isolate the front axle for the slow drive off the trail.

  • The crew from Falken Tire had a brand-new Jeep truck at Moab. Built by Chappelle’s Kustoms off of a JK Wrangler that had been badly rolled, this new truck has storage boxes for tools and parts as well as room for two spare Falken Wild Peak 37s.
