The Jeep Beach 2012 Event

Sun, Surf, Sand, And 7 Slots

Daytona Beach, Florida, is home to many great things: sand you can drive on, a race track where teams go very fast in a circle, waves you can swim in, surf shops and miniature golf courses to idle away your time at, and now Jeep Beach, a giant beach gathering of every make and model of Jeep. We attended this year and had a blast. The wheeling isn’t extreme by any means, but the atmosphere is idyllic, especially if you stay at the host hotel, Shore’s Resort and Spa, which is situated right on the sand.

Jeep Beach is more of a giant party with tons of vendors and participants and some manmade obstacles than it is a deep-woods trail event. But if you’re in Florida and looking for an event with other like-minded Jeep owners you don’t want to miss it. It’s put on by the Mid Florida Jeep Club, and they end the weekend with a grand parade of Jeeps down the sandy beach. If you need an excuse to dig out your flip-flops and drop the top on your Wrangler check out next year’s Jeep Beach. For more info visit www.jeepbeach.com.

  • Jeep Beach is a three-day event. It starts on Friday with check-in at the beachfront hotel. Saturday everyone heads to the local speedway for a giant Jeep show, a vendor row, and a man-made off-road course. Jeeps of every size, shape, and age are on display.

  • Chrome may not get you home, but it sure shines in the summer sun. This classic Golden Eagle CJ-5 sparkled in the sun. Shiny isn’t for everyone, and Jeep Beach has plenty of different styles of 4x4s.

  • If you want to get some low-range action then get in line for the manmade obstacle course. Multiple courses offer something for every skill level. Florida isn’t known for rocks, but that didn’t scare drivers away from these constructed challenges.

  • Jeep Beach’s title sponsor is Quadratec, but a variety of vendors attend to show off their wares and vehicles. There is also a huge raffle with Jeepers taking home everything from gift certificates to bumpers .

  • Rick Connerly’s Jeep Scrambler is bobbed and bigger than stock, but it still managed to win Best Looking CJ in the show as well as scramble over rock piles and pipes in the obstacle course. The big Jeep rides on Swampers, leaf springs, and 1-ton Dana 60s.

  • The obstacle course can be a bit deceiving if you run the harder lines. We heard a few axleshafts and driveshafts snap, but the organizers were quick to help extract anyone stuck or broken.

  • Sunday morning all the Jeeps converge on the flat, hard sand of Daytona Beach for a parade. This year 700some Jeeps cruised back and forth in front of the warm Atlantic surf and palm trees.

  • Ultimate Adventure alumnus Donnie Roebuck and his son Tyler made short work of the extreme piles of boulders and concrete. You would think the Atlantic salt air would rust away anything older than TJ, but we saw a fair number of clean CJs.

  • Jeep Beach is a great family event and a perfect way to get your feet wet in the sport. Hundreds of Jeep owners are there, hungry to discuss their rides and upgrades. Plus the weekend is fun and relaxing (other than worrying about sunburn).
