Inside The 2012 Overland Expo

Wanderer’s Weekend

By Fred Williams, Photography by Fred Williams

The Overland Expo arrived in the hills south of Flagstaff, Arizona, this past May for a few days of adventure. If you’ve ever dreamt of crossing the Sahara by Land Rover, exploring the Amazon by Jeep, seeing the outback from behind the wheel of a Toyota, or driving to Alaska in your Chevy, then this event will get you excited to go. The Expo is a meeting of explorers from newbie to veteran with classes on off-road driving and vehicle recovery and with advice on everything from border crossing to solar-powered camping supplies. A huge vendor area showcases anything you would ever need or want for camping and exploring the wilds of the world.

If you’d like to find a plethora of neat equipment to outfit your vehicle for adventure travel, or maybe you don’t even know what vehicle to build and just want to check out your options, then you definitely need to attend next year’s Overland Expo. Visit www.overlandexpo.com for more info.

  • Overland Expo has many interesting seminars during the weekend as well as some very entertaining adventure movies. For example, this roundtable of Jeep representatives offered attendees the chance to discuss Jeep and Ram trucks. The desire for a diesel Wrangler and Power Wagon were very palpable from attendees, but no definite plans were revealed by the Chrysler reps.

  • The Land Rover off-road instructors were on hand to give first-timer’s a chance to get behind the wheel of the company’s full line of 4x4s. Not just high-end SUV salesmen, these guys are full-blooded off-roaders with great tips and tricks for off-road driving.

  • In addition to the common U.S. vehicles, quite a few foreign-spec oddities were at the expo, such as these Nissan Patrols and rare Mitsubishi Delica 4x4 vans. Most of these were driven by people on adventures and world trips who happened to stop for the weekend at the expo and tell stories, offer advice, and relax with likeminded travelers.

  • Mercedes Benz Unimogs may have started life as hybrid farm truck/tractors, but over the years they have been on many an overland adventure worldwide and have become more and more refined. There are many models of ’Mogs, but this U140L from Couch Off Road Engineering was by far the coolest one at the show.

  • The cab-forward 4x4 trucks were really popular at this year’s expo. Earth Cruiser had this interesting 4x4 Mitsubishi on display outfitted with a camper system on the rear. Sports Mobile, known for van conversions, also had a Mitsubishi Fuso FG on display. Global Expedition Vehicles had a massive BAE systems SD Brazo truck with a Cummins and Allison transmission.

  • The 80 Series Land Cruiser seems to be the epitome of the Overland trend. These are the last of the solid-axle Toyotas offered in the U.S. They are not the fastest, but the rugged straight-six engines are hearty and long lasting. Adding a rooftop tent for camping, rear sliding drawers for storage, and swing-out tire and fuel carriers is the tried-and-true recipe for a simple tough overland vehicle.

  • In addition to the many 4x4 vehicles and upgrade options, Overland Expo also has a huge motorcycle segment. Cyclists came from near and far. These imported Russian Ural motorcycles had many dreaming of a back-to-basics sidecar adventure. These are currently being imported, and you can find out more at www.imz-ural.com.

  • The cab-forward military surplus M1078 LMTV was the coolest truck in the campground at Overland Expo. Built by Xtreme Rubicons, this monster is being outfitted for either a wild trip or the zombie apocalypse, whichever comes first.
