He’s got game. The crazy thing is that there is no ladder under him, just two solid axles (he’s converted), low gears, big meats, and a super-duty-size winch. This Toy’s not playing around. Oh wait, he is. In a matter of minutes he was on top of the world headed for the ghost town of Panamint City.

Ways to tell if you can trust the people spotting you: 1) They use only one hand. 2) They primarily use their thumb and index (“pointer”) finger to motion direction in which you should move. 3) They do not stand right in front of where you are trying to maneuver your vehicle. 4) They are focused on what you are doing and not “chatting” with the spectators. 5) Most of all, you should feel comfortable with the people spotting you. If the knowledge of your vehicle and your driving ability direct you to do or not do something you should follow your intuition. In other words, listen to reason. Sometimes that comes from a spotter and sometimes that comes from within you.

It’s go time. Obstacle/waterfall No. 1 demonstrates Mother Nature’s incredibly daunting force. When this force mixes with brazen drivers and mechanical power there is no telling what kind of show spectators will see. And no way of knowing what kind of story they will walk away telling.

Red Rover, Red Rover, send CJ7 right over! Randy’s Red Rockclimber harnesses a ’96 fuel-injected 4.0 inline-six and is filtered by K&N. Axles: 44 front, 60 rear. Both locked with ARBs! And for the kids—the gear ratios are 4.56. Need we say more? We must. The transmission is an ’83 T999 three-speed automatic, and the transfer case is a Dana 300. Cool!

Gene’s ’66 Scout 800 is finding that extreme off-roading is not for the faint of heart. The Scout has a four-cylinder, a T-18, a Dana 300, and Dana 44s front and rear. Gene will prove that the Scout can twist and turn at www.twistedaxle.com.

Like a gymnast, this green YJ pulled a wheelstand and got a lot of air. Is it invigorating to drive over huge rocks with rushing water? Absolutely. No question, Surprise Canyon and its seven waterfalls are a source of incredible inspiration. Even more inspirational are the daring individuals who traverse the sometimes algae slick, sometimes jagged, rocks.

Everyone has been the spectator of a gnarly rollover where coolers, sodas, beef jerky, tools, and extra parts come torpedoing out of a tumbling vehicle. This Toyota knew that the severity of the trail could sometimes challenge even the sturdiest of tie downs. It seems they had a plan and used every ounce of “gee whiz I wish I would have thought of that.” Whether going up or down, this vehicle has it together.

Once the tanks were full, the dogs let out, and the vehicle packed, everyone was on board and ready to make a go at the gnarly day of fun.
