4Wheel & Off-Road Magazine Cover Trucks - Cover Model

For us it's more about how it's built and driven than what kind of truck it is

1967 Chevrolet Truck Front View Mud
This shot may go back a few years (Aug. '95), yet it still has everything going for it as far as being chosen for a cover is concerned. A great retro body style ('67 Chevy stepside) that's built right, getting dirty, and painted bright orange, and that looks like it's careening right off the page. It doesn't hurt that the big-block spun Boggers are flinging mud clots like a hive of killer bees in attack mode. To you guys who whine 'cause it's a Chevy, give us a break. You know we cover everything.

1982 Ford Bronco Drivers Side Sand
If Chevys and mud aren't your cup o' tea, how about jumping, frog-green Fords in the sand (July '02) about to land in your lap? Again, we have a bright, clean vehicle ('82 Bronco) that owner Mark Lind didn't mind launching (exploding?) off the Moab sand during the Easter Jeep Safari. The truck's buildup wasn't completely finished but it worked for us.

Buggy Flipped Underside View
Yes, sometimes editors' vehicles and projects find their way onto the cover. They all do it. Let's humor them, shall we? Many of you will remember this shot of editor Rick Pewe's rolled flattie on the rocks from Sept. '96. And many of you would be right in saying it's showing its best side. This shot was one of the few cover shots we staged for dramatic effect and implied action (It looks like it had just rolled, right?). We prefer the real deal but rollovers in nature don't always happen by the magazine's deadline. If it does happen, let's hope one of our staffers is standing close enough to get the shot!

And then there's the ever-popular trail repair cover shot (Aug. '97). Not as much vehicular action here but we had a nice location on Moab slickrock, good afternoon sweet light, and the then-red Bronco of Pat Gremillion. Pat helped increase the photo's action-quotient by striking an arc with his company's trusty Premier Power Welder. And yes, he should've been wearing gloves.

Suzuki Samurai Front View Fire
Former editor David Freiburger used to say he wanted trucks "upside-down and on fire" for the cover. We just thought he was exaggerating. Then, in Dec. '97, he sprung 50 percent of that on us. The office joke was that he should've pushed the Samurai over the ledge before he took the shot in order to score full credit. The photo isn't particularly well lit (the Sammy is), but the cover definitely had drama at the expense of owner Kevin Hodges. Don't worry, we didn't ask Kevin to do this to his 'Zuki just for our cover. It did it on its own.

Jeep 4X4 Buggy Rear Passenger View Climb
Here's an example of what happens when a 4x4's paint matches too closely with its surroundings. Sam Patton's Jeep is one of our favorites-big and burly-and Sam likes to use the skinny pedal heavily even if the wheels are in the air as shown here at the first BFG Rock Crawling Championship (Apr. '99). So what's not to like? Dark brown paint against dark brown rocks, that's what. Still, we used the shot because we really liked the predicament Sam and the Jeep were in.

Pickup Truck Rear
If we're going to risk both camera- and human-bodily damage from flying rock missiles to get shots like this (Feb. '02), the least you guys can do is get silly (not stupid) and risk a little 4x4 body damage for a cover. We know most trails require slow, technical crawling which is impressive to watch, but many times trucks just looked parked in those photos. Remember, we're not going to ask you to do anything you're uncomfortable with. Or should that read "we're not going to ask you to do anything you don't already do"?
