The factory 125hp inline-six engine didn't cut it in the power and torque department, so Todd installed a torquey 383ci Chevy crate engine. This powerplant cranks out around 435 hp and is fed with an Edelbrock Pro Flo EFI system. A stage-two 700R4 from Bowtie Overdrives transfers the power and torque to the NP205 transfer case.

Simplicity is always best when it comes to dependable trail rigs. Less clutter and the right components mean there are fewer things to go wrong on the trail. Auto Meter Ultralite gauges monitor the vitals of the 40, and a great pair of broken-in Recarro seats keeps Todd and Debbie comfortable on the trail.

The frame of Meese's FJ-40 was cut and stretched 3 inches. The rear axle was moved back 8 inches and the front axle forward 2. This gave the Cruiser an additional 13 inches of wheelbase, making it much more stable on tippy terrain than the factory 90-inch wheelbase had been. Todd owns Meese Welding in Yucca Valley, California, and his top-shelf fabrication skills are evident on the six-point rollcage, bumpers, skidplates, spare-tire carrier, and bodywork.
