2010 Yamaha Grizzly 450

An ATV At Its Finest!

By , Photography by , Yamaha
The Grizzly 450 is smaller and lighter than the 550 and 700, yet we found that its performance allowed it to thread through tight trails much easier than the larger machines. The Grizzly's fully independent long-travel four-wheel suspension features double-wishbone suspension front and rear, and a ground clearance of 10.8 inches for climbing over rocks and logs.

Occasionally we get to blast around remote forest trails on cool machines designed for action, adventure, and work. Recently we had the opportunity to test the '10 Yamaha Grizzly 450 in the Capitol Forest of Washington. The Grizzly features an all-new design including EPS (electric power steering), which helps the ATV perform like a dream on the trail and in the fields.

The Grizzly is a great little machine that's perfect for romping through technically challenging trails or running the fence lines along the back 40. We found the Grizzly's performance perfect for the enthusiast-level trail running the staff enjoys most. The machine's independent front and rear suspension handles incredibly well, and the 421cc liquid-cooled, SOHC four-stroke single offers the power and performance we look for in UTVs. After a full day of trailblazing we came to the conclusion that bigger isn't always better and that the Grizzly 450 could easily become a permanent part of 4-Wheel & Off-Road's fleet.

The Grizzly is fitting for a number of outdoor activities besides work and chores. The front and rear storage racks provide enough room for hunting and fishing gear, tools, and coolers. A number of accessories are also available for the ATV, including rack extensions, snowplows, winches, brushguards, storage bags, aluminum skidplates, and brush deflectors.

  • We found the electric-start Grizzly very comfortable to ride, with all components in easy reach. The lightweight ATV is agile, with excellently controllable handling on the trail. The light steering and good turning radius make it easy to maneuver the Grizzly in four-wheel drive, even on tough terrain. The front suspension delivers 6.3 inches of travel and the rear 7.1 inches, making it easy to articulate and clear most trail obstacles.

  • We love four-wheel drive, and the Grizzly 450 features a three-position On-Command In & Out 4WD feature that lets you switch between 2WD, limited-slip 4WD, and a fully locked differential 4WD with the push of a button. An override button allows the engine to make maximum rpm in full differential lock mode. Fully locking the differentials was easy, and we found ourselves climbing over rocks, logs, and roots on nearly vertical hills with ease.

  • A high-impact plastic skidplate system provides excellent undercarriage protection for the Grizzly. The ATV also uses a rear multidisc wet brake system that's sealed to keep out water, mud, and sand. Keeping out contaminants allows even and consistent braking all the time and greatly reduces maintenance.
