Toyota Land Cruiser Fever

Lusting After a 79 Series

By: Fred Williams, , Photography by Fred Williams, Offroadimages.com.au

Jealousy is a terrible thing. It burns inside, causes you to lose your appetite, and makes it hard to sleep. Especially when you imagine all those Toyota enthusiasts overseas laughing at us Americans who don't get to own some of the coolest 4x4s that Toyota makes. We spent a few weeks in Australia a while back and got to drive a 79-series cab and chassis Land Cruiser. This wasn't just your run-of-the-mill Outback work truck. This was an Outback pickup packed full of awesome off -road accessories. But like a summer love, our time with this cool truck was short. Now it's probably being driven by some Aussie ARB engineer, and we're sure he's laughing at us every day. We've been jealous ever since.

  • The 70-series Land Cruisers are some of the toughest trucks in the world. They are available with solid axles front and rear, a 4.5L V-8 turbodiesel, and a separate frame and body with a coil-spring front and a leaf-spring rear. There are three body styles in the series: the Wagon (76 series), the Troop Carrier, also known as Troopy (78 series), and the Cab Chassis (79 series).

  • It's hard not to covet the 4.5L turbodiesel V-8 and its 202 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque. The powerplant output is enough to easily push the lightweight (yet heavy-duty) 79-series Land Cruiser over the biggest dunes and to forge the deepest water crossings.

  • Though not a monster rockcrawler or high-horsepower mud truck, this is just about the perfect 4x4 for doing a little of everything: reliable, torquey, rugged, locked, and loaded.

  • The interior of the 79 series is work-ready, with a no-frills style that has barely changed over the years. Just vinyl seats, five-speed manual transmission, and rubber floors.
