2007 Moab 4x4 Trail Mistakes - Just Don't Do It!

Mistakes in Moab

By Jerrod Jones, Photography by The 4-Wheel & Off-Road Staff

Every year we see people doing stuff they're not supposed to be doing. Sometimes it's innocent, sometimes it's intentional, and sometimes it's just sheer stupidity. Luckily we didn't see too much of the latter on our latest trip to Moab, but we did catch some dumb stuff nevertheless.

We show these types of things in an effort to keep you from repeating these pour souls' mistakes (not to embarrass them), because these mistakes can be dangerous to you, your truck, and even the environment around you. And we'd rather have all three last as long as possible. So remember, don't do this!

Thanks for caring!

Two very wrong things going on here. First of all, you are not Superman. Do not stick your arm out to stop your vehicle from leaning over. You have nowhere near the strength necessary to hold a vehicle up by your arm. Don't even try it. We know it's a reaction instinct, but fight it. Secondly, what is this guy doing under the back of the Jeep while it's trying to ascend? The driver should not be trying this with someone behind him, but there is a good chance he had no idea someone was back there.

Though this Cherokee's driver and passenger don't seem to be at too much risk of rolling, it's still a bad idea to hold onto the rollcage while the vehicle is in motion. Even if you're at no chance of rolling, the vehicle could come close to a tree or rock without you realizing it, leaving your fingers a bloody mess. This year, we heard that a passenger lost all his fingers when he grabbed the top of the rollcage during a rollover. You only have eight fingers and two thumbs, and most of them are pretty useful, so try to keep as many as possible.

Are you kidding us right now? You carry all the equipment in the world and you're not going to bother to get a strap to put around the tree instead of the winch line?! Winching off a tree like this can cut through the tree bark, leaving the tree susceptible to disease or insect infestation. So give a tree a break, and remember to always use nylon straps to go around tree trunks.

  • 2007 Moab 4X4 Trail Mistakes Water
"Hi, I just bought a brand-new Jeep and I haven't figured out yet that we're supposed to stay on the trails, not the riverways." At least we hope that was the driver's story. Most water crossings you come to on trails lead you directly across the waterway. Make sure to abide by that rule and spend as little time in the water as you can. You can disrupt life in a river traveling downstream, not to mention how badly you make the rest of the off-road population look if some crazy enviro-nazi were to see you doing it. Don't be this guy. Stay on the trail. We're sure this was purely a mistake of direction on the driver's part that ended with him getting his feet (and interior) all soggy.

Wow, this was just a bad situation waiting to happen. The driver was doing all right earlier in the day, but did not have good visibility due to lack of lighting and got his new truck's passenger-side door bound up on a rock coming through a skinny section. Make sure you are prepared for a night run if you are going to play in the dark. This driver did some expensive damage to his nice truck and made quite a backup on the trail that night. He eventually got his truck off the rock using a Hi-Lift Jack and a method we wouldn't condone, but at least he was off the rock and out of there.
