Enviromental Extremists - 4x Forward

Enviromental Extremists Tire

Time for Action
We've received quite a few letters lately decrying our lack of action or coverage on the environmental front. The truth of the matter is we have quite a bit of information in our Drivelines department written by Wendy Frazier, which starts on page 16 of this issue. The problem most people run into is that there isn't a central clearinghouse for us four wheelers to spearhead the defense of our sport, which is under constant attack by environmental extremists. They have the money, and the gullible public's support by simply saying, "Save the planet, and send your money."

Save the planet? From whom? Hey, it's my planet too! It seems like these groups want to save it from us for themselves, with no regard to land rights or public policy. We all want to save the planet from destruction, but as 4x4 enthusiasts we also believe in a wisely implemented multiple use policy allowing us to recreate in the way we like. Closing down forest roads that have been in existence for more than a hundred years because of pressure from small yet vocal groups backed by big bucks is a travesty that we can do something about.

Five organizations come to mind that actually do something about this, with plenty more local groups and individuals trying their best to do the same. United Four Wheel Drive Association (www.ufwda.org), California Association of 4 Wheel Drive Clubs (www.cal4wheel.com), and the Blue Ribbon Coalition (www.blueribbon .org), have been in the forefront, and a new industry oriented program from an old time group CORVA (www.corva.org) is underway.
