Political & Environmental Watch*Our friends at SEMA tipped us off to some new ORV designations proposed for the West Mojave Desert in southern California: The Bureau of Land Management issued proposed off-road vehicle designations for the West Mojave Desert Planning Area, which encompasses nearly 3.3 million acres of public land in Inyo, Kern, Los Angeles, and San Bernardino counties. The proposed plan amendment is available online at www.ca.blm.gov/cdd/wemo.html. The document is also available in hard copy at BLM's California Desert District Office, 22835 Calle San Juan De Los Lagos, Moreno Valley, CA 92553, 909/697-5200; Barstow Field Office, 2601 Barstow Rd., Barstow, CA 92311, 760/252-6000; and Ridgecrest Field Office, 300 S. Richmond Rd., Ridgecrest, CA 93555, 760/384-5400.
*Also from SEMA: Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO) intends to reintroduce legislation to designate as wilderness an additional 1.6 million acres of land spread over 59 separate sites in Colorado. While the legislation received little attention in the last Congress, DeGette is now trying to link the issue to the Department of the Interior's recent decision to stop considering potential wilderness lands beyond those identified in a 1991 inventory. Much of the land covered in DeGette's legislation was not included in the inventory, which took 15 years to complete.
*The fight over how to use California's Surprise Canyon made the front page of the Los Angeles Times recently, in an article that described the battle between environmentalists who want to keep the canyon closed to vehicular travel and local four-wheelers who feel the designated road should be reopened to controlled use. It ran with a nice photo of Richard Gauthier's yellow XJ winching up a waterfall. Members of a local 4WD club, the Trailblazers, recently purchased two acres of private land in Panamint City, which is at the top of the canyon. Their reason: property owners have a right to access the canyon. But the Feds say the access doesn't necessarily have to be by vehicle. The fight goes on.
