You've seen the ads: "The new Nitto Terra Grappler. Also available in funky big rim sizes that you never really thought about bolting on your truck." But how many of you have actually tried these tires or know someone who has? Well, now you do know someone, because your friends at 4-Wheel & Off-Road mounted a set of the new 37x14.00R18 Terra Grapplers on 18x10 Weld Stonecrusher wheels to try out. Upon first glance, the staff sort of sneered as the tires were rolled into the office. We aren't used to seeing any type of all-terrain in our stables except for the BFGoodrichs. But upon closer inspection, we realized that Nitto's new tire was more than just a big street tire. A lot of thought was put into making an all-around tire that had great traction in all conditions. You have to give Nitto's designers credit-it's easy to build a terrain-specific tire, but try making an all-around tire that is supposed to work well everywhere. That's no simple task. It's an endeavor that we believe Nitto pulled off very successfully with its new Terra Grappler.
Mounting & Balance
We had the big donuts mounted at The Tire Store in San Luis Obispo. The tires looked like they came out of a high-quality mold, but we didn't realize how sweet it was until we balanced them. Before the weights were thrown on, the tires came out like so:
