1988 Ford F250 Tonka - Construction Zone

Children, Please Step Away From the Nuclear Tonka

Photography by David Kennedy, Wendy Frazier

It wasn't the OSHA-approved safety yellow paint on Joey Sotomayer's F-250 that caught our attention. Nope, it was the 460ci Blue Oval mill at full throttle under the hood screaming through 3-inch Flowmaster mufflers that got our horsepower adrenaline pumping. We love it when mud guys show up at the desert events we cover because they don't care about crawl ratios and they always pack big-blocks under the hood. Joey bought this '88 F-250 as a stolen vehicle and built it up using parts he stripped off his wrecked '86 F-150, which was featured on the Sept. '99 cover of 4x4 Power. After blowing up three engines at Glamis and bending the frame after a near-miss crash with a Jeep, Joey decided it was time to start with a new platform and began work on Tonka II.
