Lifting A Regular Chevy 4x4

The Basic Bow Tie Boost

Modern GM trucks have just about everything a guy could ask for: a powerful V-8, plenty of payload capacity, and a ton of room for gear. There’s just one thing the General keeps overlooking: a decent ride height. It’s almost as though the Bow Tie makers think we are shrinking! Fortunately, where the factory drops off, the aftermarket picks up quickly.

Take Zone Offroad Products for example. Zone understands that not everyone needs a 6-inch lift, but many truck buyers often want a little more clearance under their 4x4. To satisfy the lift cravings of GM owners, Zone has launched a complete 2-inch lift for ’07-’11 Chevy/GMC 1500 4x4 trucks.

This easy-to-install lift doesn’t require any special tools or tricks of the trade.

In just a few hours your late-model GM can have a taller stance without deterring the factory ride quality.

With our ’08 Chevy 1500 in need of a boost and a new set of treads, we went ahead and made the upgrade with Zone’s 2-inch kit. This gave the quad-cab Chevy more room for 33-inch-tall Falken WildPeak A/T tires. And unlike a traditional leveling kit, this system raised the rear of the truck as well. The result netted us the aggressive stance that we were looking for and gave us that extra bit of lift that sometimes is the difference between driving through or shoveling out.

To install the front lift, you’ll need to detach the upper A-arm from the steering knuckle. Doing this provides the extra space needed to set the strut spacer in place. Power tools will speed things up, but a basic set of hand tools is all you need to get the job done.

To match the front lift, the rear of the truck received a tapered 2-inch block that sandwiches between the factory block and leaf springs. Longer U-bolts are provided with the kit, and though an optional shock upgrade is available, the factory shocks can be reused.

Mounted on the factory 20-inch wheels, the Falken WildPeaks are quiet and perform well, a good choice for our daily driver and light wheeler platform. And since the aggressive A/Ts are Load Range E they are well suited to handling our 1⁄2-ton’s towing and performance needs.

While leveling kits are wildly popular, Zone’s complete 2-inch system keeps the truck’s factory rake. This is ideal for those who tow or haul heavy loads frequently. Riding level is great, but when you add weight to the back of your pickup you want to keep the nose of the truck low so the handing doesn’t go south.
