Cooper Discoverer A/T3 Tire Test

Tow Rig Tires

What you want and what you need are rarely the same. Often our eyes go for the bigger slice of cake, the higher-horsepower engine, the more extreme tire. Truth be told, most of our 4x4s live on the street, and although massive muddies may look the best and work better in the slop , when it comes to a daily driver or tow rig those tires are, as Mr. Spock would say, “simply illogical.”

However, our fullsize trucks are coming from the factory with wimpy rubber. An easy-to-install budget leveling kit for most will clear 35-inch rubber, so why not upgrade? Our ’10 Ram test truck lives most of its time in front of a trailer, so even though we like running mud tires we realized that saving them for trail use or special occasions of extended dirt makes more sense. Thus we ordered up a set of Cooper Discoverer A/T3s in a LT315/70R17 size, wrapped them around some Dick Cepek rims, and headed down the road. To our delight, the tires did exactly as we had hoped and in many ways performed better than a more aggressive tire would have.

  • Our daily driver, tow tractor, and all-around battleaxe is a Ram 3500, and as much as we want it shod with super-knobby rubber we realize it is a waste of money when a good all-terrain works 95 percent of the time. The Cooper Discoverer A/T3 is an aggressive all-terrain without the noise and reduced tread life of a mud-terrain tire.

On the road they had zero ill manners and were a lot quieter than the old mud tires we had been running. Plus, with a 55,000-mile tread wear warranty we expect to be happy for many miles to come.

  • A sore spot we’ve found with nearly every “aggressive all-terrain” tire we’ve tested, including the A/T3, is what we call the gravel gun. This is when the large tread voids pick up stones the size of almonds and send them rocketing into your wheelwell, paint, or mirror when you get up to highway speed. There has to be a way to outsmart the pebbles.

  • Since we’re testing on our tow rig we didn’t get any mileage over rocks or deep mud, but loose dirt and sand were no issue for the big truck on Coopers. The tires are at home both on desert terrain and wet tarmac, where the multitude of siping grabbed tight. Siping like this is also effective in snow.

  • The 17x9 Dick Cepek DC-2 aluminum wheels were a real sticking point for most of our reviewers. They either loved the style or hated it. Compared to the old steel wheels they gave the truck an entirely new look, definitely less work truck, more flashy. Yet the wheels are not all show, with a 3,640-pound load rating, clear coating against harsh climates like snow and salt, and a design to fit over large caliper and allow the use of tire pressure monitoring systems, they look good and work hard.

Discoverer STT
The A/T3 is a great daily driver tire, but Cooper also offers an excellent mud tire in the Discoverer STT. We’ve covered them in the past, so we’ll just touch on them here, but these radial tires come in sizes up to 37 inches and are the most aggressive tire in the Cooper lineup.

With rim options from 15 to 20 (same as the A/T3) we had no trouble fitting the STTs on some old slot mags. The aggressive tread rolls over to the sidewall, forming what Cooper calls Scalloped Shoulder Lugs. Plus, they have bead protectors and three-ply carcass construction. We’ve found them to perform excellent in both rocks and mud and to fill a niche where an all-terrain just won’t do.
