Back in our December ’95 issue we featured all sorts of rigs from the Peoria, Illinois, 4xFunFest. This is one we nearly cried over, since the ’68 Mustang sheetmetal was pristine, and it was a convertible. What can we say? We love the cars and the 4x4 part, but not together. Hey, have it your way. We sure do.

April ’98: Looking back just four years found us agag at Quinn Dusenberry’s ’71 Bronco. Pink zebra stripes and a half cab? Ick! Lucky for us (and him) this Ford is stuffed with all sorts of cool tech stuff like rear coils and a 351 Windsor.

July ’99: We just don’t get it. Purple zebra stripes, and on a Scout? Our Readers’ Rides section is mainly determined by what you readers send in, but we still get to pick what we print. What were we thinking?

June ’95: More zebras! They must be running out of them in the wild. In fact, a reader wrote in, “I like the truck, but let’s put this zebra-stripe thing behind us, and the Holstein thing way behind us.” We agree, but we guarantee that we’ll get more pictures than ever after this article.

June ’98: Why, oh why, do we still do it? Probably because they stick in your mind like a bad dream, such as falling of a cliff. This ’40s Plymouth was bashing around in Northern Minnesota, and we just had to have a shot.

Our September ’95 issue featured 4x4s of our now-famous 4xFunfest. They’re about the only place we ever find car-bodied 4x4s, such as this ’67 Camaro owned by Roy Stephens. We wonder, is this ride still being thrashed through the slime, or has it been crushed or restored?

It just won’t go away; purple and orange and…hey, what color is a zebra? John Leclercq pounded his pony in our January ’98 coverage of Extreme racing at our 4xFunfest. We didn’t realize we had so many photos of zebra stuff until we wrote this story.

OK, last one, we promise (sure, if you do). Our coverage of Attica, Indiana, in the September ’99 issue garnered our final zebra paintjob for this issue. The Blazer was bitchin’ and wheeled great, but our eyes just can’t stand it anymore!

Our search for the Perfectly Ugly Truck in the November ’99 issue netted some really bad and good stuff, and then this. Volvo makes perfectly good military 4x4s, but John O’Bar of Texas had to put this ’83 Volvo atop an ’80 Blazer frame. Well, it did well in the ugly contest and made this issue, so something must be right. Right?

Even as late as July ’95 we had the patriotic fervor going, with Rick Le Grow’s ’88 monster. We don’t often go for the full-blown showtruck look, but just like now, a little bit of Americana doesn’t hurt a thing. OK, we’d rather have a beat-up trail rig and be sitting around a campfire, but ya do what ya gotta do.

It seems like yesterday when we touted our 20th birthday, but a lot has gone on in the last five years. You can check out our blowout for the big two-oh in our Mar. ’98 issue, or look at some of the other stuff we found for this extravaganza. Looking back at the past is sometimes considered lame, especially when we read some of the predictions we made, but it’s downright amazing how some of them came true, while others were so wonderfully far off. Even checking out the advertisements, not to mention the styles of the time, makes us wonder, “What were we thinking?” But it has been a fun ride, and we know now what mistakes not to make.

We decided that there is far too much great stuff to pack into one issue, so we’ll have ongoing specials of both the best and the worst of 4-Wheel & Off Road. Next month we’ll check out the advertisements from the past, and take a look at where those companies are today.

In this issue we’ll take a look at the most recent years of Freaky 4x4s, as we call ’em, and the weirdness that goes along with that very title. No, we’re not poking fun at the rigs or those who built them, just ourselves and what we considered mainstream four-wheeling. Read and enjoy this blast from the past.
