Ultimate Adventure 2010: Bringing It All Together

Without a good man at the helm of the Ultimate Adventure it wouldn't be the greatest four-wheeling event in America. Rick Péwé, our editor-in-chief, does a phenomenal job of assembling a platoon of some of the best four-wheelers and loyal readers in the country. The ragtag bunch of hooligans participates in the UA not for glory, fame, or money, but for the love of four-wheel adventure.

But one man can only do so much. The UA wouldn't be possible without the help of a few 4WD clubs and individuals from across the U.S. These folks put their lives on hold to help make the UA dream a reality. If you can imagine just one guy traveling half the country while looking for great off-road adventure and making hundreds of phone calls, securing permits, and running the magazine, then you realize just how valuable help really is. The entire staff and everyone who participates in the UA fully appreciate all their efforts.

On Independence Day, Liza Snow, the president of the Summit Crawlers Off-Road Club (www.summitcrawlers.com), and her crew led us on a trail run on private property near Keene, New Hampshire. The trails are maintained by the Northeast Association of 4WD Clubs (nea4wd.org). After a day of wheelin' some amazing trails, incredible BBQ was served by the Summit Crawlers. After an informative tour at the Smith Family Sugar Farm (802.869.2417, smithfamilymaple@hotmail.com) to see how maple syrup is made, we headed over to wheel at the Mettowee Mud Boggers Park in Granville, New York (www.mettoweemudboggers.com), owned by Ralph and Clare Jameson. There we appreciated the trail leadership of Doyle Ross and the members of the Northeast Offroad Vehicle Alliance (nova4x4.org). On Day 4 we found ourselves at Rok-Park in Fonda, New York, four-wheeling with the Rok-Freekz (www.rok-freekz.com) and Lyman and Meredith Saltsman. They showed us an awesome time on the technically challenging trails of the park and then cooked us a superb BBQ pork dinner. It was an incredible day. We hope to hit Rok-Park with the Rok-Freekz again soon.

The evening of Day 6 and all through Day 7 we enjoyed ourselves at Rausch Creek in Tremont, Pennsylvania. Bruce Shallis and Lynn Ehrenfeld and the staff at Rausch Creek led us on their famous trails and fed us two delectable dinners. The entire Petersen's 4-Wheel & Off-Road staff extends its appreciation to you for your help and support, and we look forward to the next adventure at Rausch Creek (www.rauschcreekoffroadpark.org).

On the last day we found ourselves four-wheeling Moto Cove at the Cove Campground in Gore, Virginia (www.motocove.com, www.covecampground.com). This family-owned campground and off-road park is operated by Dan, Willis, and Bill McDowell. Friends and volunteers of the park and our trail leader, Matt Corum, helped us tour the park's challenging trails. Thanks, guys. We'll be back!
