April 2007 All-Out 4x4 Whoops!

Send us your 4x4 truck Whoops!

Oh my, you've been a troubled bunch this past year. We might have received some of our very best photos ever in the last several months. It seems that complete lack of forethought is ruling supreme, and we are so very proud of you! Now get back out there and get yourself as stuck as you can (after you finish reading the mag, of course). We need more Whoops photos! E-mail them to us at whoops@4wheeloffroad.com.

Here's a pic of my '78 F-150. This is what happens when 3,000 pounds of truck meets more than 3 feet of mud and water. And then an F-250 snatches your front clip half off.

  • Big Problems
We strayed off the roadway a little too far. An hour and a half later with the help of an extra 637E and a D6R, we were back to work.

Diving
A buddy and I were sliding around the water hole at Silver Lake Sand Dunes in his 2WD Chevy when he decided to detour into the middle of the hole. He got stuck in some ruts and spun himself deeper, until the carb took in water and killed the motor. That gave us a chance to talk to him and ask why it wasn't 4WD again (ha ha). An FJ40 attempted a pull, a Hummer tried as well, but it was a week-old stock V-10 Super Duty that was able to free him up. After a complete flushing, the Chevy still lives to this day.

  • Showoff
I had a little incident on Carnage Canyon. We took the wrong line coming down Fireman's Hill and rested it on the nose. We actually started to go over, smacked the tree (denting the roof), and came to balance as you see it sitting here. No trick photography, either. Quite a ride, I must say!

  • Buggered S-10
A buddy and I were out wheelin' at a local creek when we found this innocent-looking mud hole. I gave it a shot, but as you can tell, looks can be deceiving. There was no bottom to this hole that we could find.

  • Submersible
This is what happens when you don't block your wheels when parked on a hill beside a lake. It took one winch, a 3-ton chain hoist, a little bit of elbow grease, and two hours to get it out. I had her running two days later.

Here's what's left of my '68 Jeep Gladiator after a fun day (well, almost fun) in the Oregon dunes. Got a little too close to the edge. Buick 350, TH400, NP203 Dana 44 front, 70 rear, 4.10s, 16 inches of lift, TSL 44-18.5-15s. Anything I would change? Yeah, the cab.

  • Jacked-Up Timberjack
Just another day logging a swamp in Lily, Wisconsin. Those are 5 1/2-foot-tall, 30-inch-wide tires that are buried. It wasn't bad until we hit some ruts. Five broken chains and six hours later, we were back to gettin' 'er done.

  • One Less Trar
Some friends and I were out climbing some pits when, to my surprise, the other side of the pit had been dug out. Didn't see it...never had time to stop. Straight down I went and slammed her on her roof. There was a little damage but I managed to pry the roof up enough to drive her home.

  • Just Another Day...
I have attached some pictures of a hole my truck fell in. I am sure everyone gets stuck from time to time and their buddies usually do their best to get them out. But sometimes you have to call in the tow truck. The tow truck snapped one of his two cables trying to get me out.

  • The Things You Miss On the Slope
I work at a ski resort and when this stuck happened I thought of the pics in your magazine. One of the trainee groomer operators was a little too cocky for his own good. I told him to remember one thing: speed kills, slow thrills. No bodily injuries, but his ego was sure hurting.

  • Not That Route Either
Here are some pics of getting my truck stuck for the first time in Sargent, Texas. It took three four-wheel drives with two winches to get it out! It's hard to tell just how stuck it is until you realize that this truck is lifted.

  • No Where To Go But Down
This bridge was 102 years old and on a dirt road used only by local hunters and four-wheelers. It's amazing the driver even made it to the bridge. When he saw the posted 3-ton limit sign, he should've stopped, but obviously he didn't.

This is my '85 Mack R688 water truck. The pic was taken north of Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada, and yes those are 36x48R20 floater tires on the back of it. It took a D8 to pull me out of that one. Just another day at the office!

  • Lost In the Sand of Time
Mom got a little carried away when she was trying to haul off seashells. I guess that minivan didn't have as much umph as she thought. The next morning we gave it a look but no such luck. It would have taken a bulldozer and a crane to fix this one. We suppose it's still there.

  • Hole finder
Going down the trail, we came to this nasty sinkhole. The four other trucks I was with managed to negotiate their way around it, and then came my turn. Being the last truck to go, the only way through was forward. Four hours, one wrecked front bumper, one snapped winch line, another winch line wrecked from fraying, a lot of digging, and a bunch of frustration finally got me out. We still made it back in time for the BBQ as this was Day 3 of the Calgary Nissan and Import 4x4 Jamboree. Need bigger tires!

  • B-Day Treat
This is my '04 GMC 2500HD Duramax Diesel SLT that I flipped and totaled on my birthday! Pretty much my best birthday ever (sarcasm). I was driving down a paved road late at night when all of a sudden the road changed to dirt and cut a sharp left. As soon I hit the dirt, the truck slid off the road, hit a bank just high enough to catch the undercarriage of the truck, then flipped it. There were six people in it but luckily everyone was OK.

  • Help Please!
Hello, I am Sofia B. I live in Sarcedo, in the north of Italy. Me and Enrico (my brother) have found an old issue of 4-Wheel & Off-Road (Oct. '89). Very beautiful! My parents bought it during their honeymoon in an Arizona shop. Sometimes we drive Dad's Samurai in the fields near our home. We are very fond of off-roading. Look what happened to some friends of ours.
